Peter van der Velden specializes in maritime and transport law and international trade. He primarily focusses on international arbitration, mediation and litigation in commercial contract disputes in these fields. In addition, he is frequently engaged to draft a variety of commercial contracts.
Mr. Van der Velden’s extensive arbitration experience includes mandates acting as party representative in ICC, CIETAC, AAA/ICDR, DIFC/LCIA, CEPANI, NAI and TAMARA arbitrations. He has applied a wide variety of foreign and international uniform laws and oftentimes joins forces with foreign local counsel qualified in the law applicable to the particular contract. His litigation practice includes proceedings on his speciality of effecting freezing orders on ships and their bunkers, which he can assist with not only in the Netherlands but also in foreign jurisdictions.
His clients include trading houses, manufacturers, franchise organisations, commodity traders (with an emphasis on steel and grain) and suppliers in the maritime and transport industry.
Mr. Van der Velden holds positions in various professional legal and branch organisations. These positions include Board Member of the largest network of shipping lawyers, www.shiparrested.com, Honorary Member of The Commercial Bar Association and member of the ICC’s Banking and Commercial Law and Practice Commissions. He was recently appointed as DOCDEX expert on documentary credit issues.
Mr. Van der Velden frequently speaks and publishes on topics in his field of expertise, more particularly on letters of credit, ship arrests and international arbitration.
