Elana Bertram is a partner with Parlatore Law Group and practices in the fields of patent and trademark prosecution, general corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and intellectual property licensing. Recent projects have included secured transactions and venture capital investments, patent drafting, and employee incentive compensation. Whether a company is at the “idea in a garage” stage, pursuing private equity, or ready for acquisition, her keen understanding of marketing and business strategies and a deep knowledge of intellectual property add unique value. She has helped clients monetize their ideas through licensing patents, crowdfunding, private equity, and grants.
She is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent & Trademark Office and admitted to practice in Connecticut and New York superior courts and the District of Connecticut federal court.
Prior to joining PLG, she founded Hawley Legal Resources, LLC, where she practiced for eight years. She most recently served as General Counsel for HealthVenture, a seed-stage venture capital firm targeting digital health solutions. She previously served as interim General Counsel at the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, where she handled multiparty clinical trial agreement negotiations, grant administration, and directing outside counsel in litigation matters. Ms. Bertram also worked at Michaud-Kinney Group LLC, a boutique intellectual property law firm handling patent & trademark prosecution and litigation.
Attorney Bertram is an Assistant Professor for Hawai’i Pacific University College of Business, and has previously taught graduate courses for the University of Maryland Global Campus Graduate School and for the University of New Haven School of Health Sciences. She is also a co-founder of Oki Nexus, Inc., a charitable organization bringing English-language learning and job skills training to low-income communities in Okinawa, Japan. Her past community service includes Vice-Chairman of the Town of Newtown Economic Development Commission from 2011-16 and sat on the State of Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Conservation Advisory Council. She also served as a Corporator for Newtown Savings Bank for over two years.
In addition to providing legal and consulting services for private clients, Attorney Bertram speaks to groups of professionals and service-providers about intellectual property principles in order to help them maximize the value they offer their clients.
She lives in Kailua, HI, with her husband and two children.
She earned her juris doctor magna cum laude from Quinnipiac University School of Law, where she was both a Dean’s Fellow and Editor-in-Chief of the Quinnipiac Health Law Journal. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in biological sciences and worked for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals prior to becoming an attorney. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Yale School of Management.
